Baby Bump In The Bay
March 04, 2018

This month we had the opportunity to travel back to San Francisco together for the first time in a couple of years… I’m definitely missing those days when I could pack up my things and head over for a few weeks at a time, but life (i.e. work) happened! Romel headed out a few days before me to get a jumpstart on his work week. Five days was definitely not enough to eat all the delicious food San Francisco has to offer, but I think the bump + I did a pretty good job.

Romel really wanted to eat at a Michelin star restaurant, so our first stop was Kin Khao Thai Eatery. We had the ‘Mushroom Hor Mok Terrine’ (a mousse-like curry with something that looked like rice krispies) to start, the ‘Caramalized Pork Belly’ (obvs Roms would order the pork belly) in the middle, and the ‘Massaman Nuea’ (mmm… braised beef cheeks) to finish. We really enjoyed all of the dishes, but unfortunately we were too full to have dessert. We’re coming back to try the rice pudding next time!

While Romel was at work, I had some solo adventures around the city. It was a bit more challenging this time around to cover as much ground as I did on my previous visits as I get tired a lot quicker with the baby on board. It was interesting to see what had changed since my last visit, but I did find myself ending up in some of my favourite places, such as the Ferry Building. People watching + humphry slocombe ice cream = um, yes please.

One of the highlights of the trip was definitely watching a Golden State Warriors game (…although I secretly wished it was a Raptors game). It ended up being a really close game and the Warriors won! Woohoo!

We also ~*happened*~ to eat at a couple of Filipino x Mexican fusion spots. I obvs had to make a trip to the Senor Sisig food truck to get a burrito. The photo below, which Romel sneakily took of me eating this burrito, really captures this majestical moment in my life.

We also tried a new place called Mestiza', which served dishes like pork adobo tacos, lechon kiwali (yum), and plantains. I really liked the chill atmosphere + space – oh, and the complimentary chips + salsa. We also made a quick stop by this cool arcade/bar across the street called Coin-Op Game Room and since I can’t drink alcohol, I spent all my quarters on arcade games.

On Saturday, we started our day off early with a trip to Vive La Tarte. This pastry/coffee spot was such a cool space with it’s large open concept with ample of seating. They’re known for their fancy croissants, which did not disappoint. We got an almond one and a banana ginger one – both equally delicious!

We also ventured out to the Fisherman’s Wharf for some clam chowder and Pier 39 for some sea lion spotting. There were tons of people everywhere and I honestly just wanted to plop on the dock like the sea lions.

From there, we went to Chinatown, Union Square, and a bunch of shops selling clothes that, according to Romel, I can no longer fit into. To live up to that comment, we headed to Aria Korean Tapas, which I had spotted on Insta, for some kimbap (one of my faves) + Korean fried chicken (one of Romel’s faves). The cute old Korean man who was working there even offered me a nice comfy chair because he noted my growing bump… “You sit here! For baby!!!”

As always, we had a good time and more importantly, tons of good eats, in San Francisco. Next time we’re back, we’ll need a table for 3! 😉
